A First-of-its-Kind Celebration in Barcelona: Honoring San Lorenzo Ruiz
A joyous milestone unfolded in Barcelona on September 28, 2025, as the Filipino community gathered at the Parroquia de la Comunidad Filipina to celebrate San Lorenzo Ruiz Day with a vibrant fiesta unlike any before.
Dedicated to the first Filipino martyr and saint, the festivity began with a solemn procession and a holy Catholic mass, then blossomed into a lively program showcasing music, dance, and cultural pride. The evening culminated in a festive salu-salo, where families and friends shared a wide spread of beloved Pinoy dishes, filling the parish grounds with the warmth of home.
During the mass, the dramatic retelling of San Lorenzo Ruiz’s life left a deep impression on the faithful. Born in Binondo, Manila, around 1600, he lived as a calligrapher and family man until a false accusation forced him to leave the Philippines with Dominican priests. In Japan, however, they were arrested for their Christian faith, tortured, and ultimately executed by being hanged upside down over a pit on September 29, 1637. Through unimaginable suffering, Lorenzo refused to renounce his faith and died proclaiming his devotion to God.
The cultural program reflected the same spirit of faith and resilience. It opened with a dance from Iskwelang Pinoy, followed by another graceful performance from Centro Filipino. Lieyne Mendoza captivated the audience with a heartfelt song, while the Immanuel Choir delighted everyone with a cheerful ukulele medley. The FCB Choir added an energetic twist with a live dance interpretation of Palarong Pambansa, merging tradition with creativity.
The evening drew to a meaningful close with a message from Fr. Lino de Castro, followed by the Council of Parish Leaders singing Sanlibong Buhay. The piece echoed San Lorenzo Ruiz’s immortal words: “I am a Catholic, and I wholeheartedly accept death for God. Had I a thousand lives, I would offer them all to Him.”
This first San Lorenzo Ruiz Fiesta in Barcelona not only honored the saint’s enduring legacy but also wove together faith, culture, and community spirit—leaving a lasting memory in the hearts of all who came.
